The election took place at a critical juncture for Iran, which is negotiating the United States’ return to the nuclear deal and removal of the American sanctions, besides struggling with a troubled economy and COVID-19 pandemic. The election held in this backdrop was participated by 48.9% of the country’s nearly 59 million voters. Cleric and Chief Justice Ebrahim Raisi, 60, a conservative who prefers calling himself revolutionist won the election defeating Mohsen Rezaei, Abdolnaser Hemmati, and Amir Hossein Ghazizadeh.
